Bleed & Margin Calculator
Calculate the correct bleed, safe margin and trim dimensions for professional print projects. Enter your trim size and bleed amount to instantly get the full document size with bleed and the safe area for text and important elements.

Formula used
Safe area = Trim size β 2 Γ safe_margin
Example: A4 (210 Γ 297) + 3 mm bleed = Document 216 Γ 303 mm
Safe area with 5 mm margin = 200 Γ 287 mm
Bleed: Extra artwork beyond the trim line. After printing the sheet is trimmed to the trim size; bleed ensures no white edge remains.
Safe margin: Keep all critical content β text, logos β inside the safe zone (typically 3β5 mm inside the trim line) to avoid accidental trimming.
Example calculations
Example 1 β A4 flyer, 3 mm bleed, 5 mm safe margin:
Document = 216 Γ 303 mm. Safe zone = 200 Γ 287 mm.
Example 2 β Business card (85 Γ 55 mm), 2 mm bleed, 3 mm margin:
Document = 89 Γ 59 mm. Safe zone = 79 Γ 49 mm.
Example 3 β US Letter (8.5 Γ 11 in), 0.125 in bleed, 0.25 in margin:
Document = 8.75 Γ 11.25 in. Safe zone = 8.0 Γ 10.5 in.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the trim size β the final size after cutting (e.g. A4 = 210 Γ 297 mm).
- Set the bleed amount β 3 mm is standard for most jobs.
- Set the safe margin β 5 mm inside trim for standard projects.
- Read the document size with bleed and safe zone dimensions.
- Set up your design file to the document size and keep content within the safe zone.
Standard bleed values by print type
| Print type | Bleed | Safe margin |
|---|---|---|
| Flyers / leaflets | 3 mm | 5 mm |
| Business cards | 2β3 mm | 3 mm |
| Magazines / books | 3 mm | 5β8 mm |
| Posters | 5 mm | 5β10 mm |
| Wide format banners | 10β15 mm | 15β20 mm |
Notes & limitations
This calculator handles uniform bleed (same on all sides). Packaging and book spines require more complex setups β always confirm bleed specifications with your print provider. For educators printing from ColoringBuds.com, a 3 mm bleed with 10 mm safe margin gives a clean result on any home or office printer.
Frequently asked questions
What is bleed in printing?
Bleed is extra artwork that extends beyond the intended trim edge. After printing, the sheet is cut to the trim size; bleed ensures no white gap at the edge even if the cut is slightly off.
How much bleed do I need for A4 printing?
3 mm of bleed on all sides is standard for A4. Your design file should be 216 Γ 303 mm (210 Γ 297 trim + 3 mm bleed each side).
What is the safe zone in print design?
The safe zone is the area inside the trim line where all important content β text, logos, faces β must stay. Typically 3β5 mm inside the trim edge.
What bleed is required for business cards?
Most print providers require 2β3 mm bleed for business cards. Set up your card at 91 Γ 61 mm (85 Γ 55 trim + 3 mm bleed each side), keep text within 79 Γ 49 mm.
Do coloring pages need bleed?
For home printing without professional trimming, bleed is not needed β a 10β15 mm margin is sufficient. For professionally printed and trimmed coloring books, add 3 mm bleed.
What is the difference between trim size and document size?
Trim size is the final printed piece after cutting (e.g. 210 Γ 297 mm for A4). Document size is the file you create, larger by the bleed amount on each side (e.g. 216 Γ 303 mm with 3 mm bleed).
