Poster Tile Printing Calculator

Calculate how many A4 or Letter sheets you need to tile-print a large poster. Set the target poster size, overlap between tiles, and paper size to get the exact tile grid and total page count.

Last updated: June 2026

Formula used

Effective tile width = Paper width − 2 × overlap
Effective tile height = Paper height − 2 × overlap

Columns = ⌈Poster width ÷ Effective tile width⌉
Rows = ⌈Poster height ÷ Effective tile height⌉
Total pages = Columns × Rows

The overlap (typically 5–15 mm) creates a glue margin so adjacent tiles can be joined without gaps.

Example calculations

Example 1 — A1 poster (594 × 841 mm) on A4 sheets, 10 mm overlap:
Effective tile: 190 × 277 mm. Columns = ⌈594÷190⌉ = 4. Rows = ⌈841÷277⌉ = 4. Total: 16 pages.

Example 2 — 100 × 60 cm banner on Letter, 5 mm overlap:
Effective tile: 206 × 269 mm. Columns = ⌈1000÷206⌉ = 5. Rows = ⌈600÷269⌉ = 3. Total: 15 pages.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the target poster size in mm or inches.
  2. Choose paper size (A4 or Letter) and orientation.
  3. Set the overlap — 10 mm is recommended for gluing.
  4. Read the tile grid (columns × rows) and total page count.
  5. Use PosteRazor or Acrobat's Poster mode to split and print.

Standard poster sizes

NamemmA4 pages (10 mm overlap)
A4210 × 2971
A3297 × 4202 × 2 = 4
A2420 × 5943 × 3 = 9
A1594 × 8414 × 4 = 16
A0841 × 11895 × 5 = 25

Notes & limitations

This calculator gives the tile count for cutting and gluing. Actual tiling must be done in a print driver or PosteRazor (free, open source) or Acrobat Reader's built-in "Poster" mode. For large-format printable coloring pages, visit ColoringBuds.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tile print a poster on A4 paper?

Use PosteRazor (free software) or Adobe Acrobat Reader's Poster print mode. Use this calculator to know the page count, then split and print.

How much overlap should I use for tiling?

5–15 mm is the typical range. 10 mm is a good default — enough gluing surface without wasting tile content.

How many A4 pages do I need for an A1 poster?

With 10 mm overlap, you need a 4 × 4 grid = 16 A4 pages to cover an A1 poster (594 × 841 mm).

Can I tile print in landscape orientation?

Yes. Landscape A4 tiles (297 × 210 mm) can be more efficient for wide banners. This calculator lets you select landscape orientation.

What is PosteRazor?

PosteRazor is a free, open-source application that splits a high-resolution image into tiles for tile-printing on standard paper. Download at posterazor.sourceforge.net.
