Optimise the layout of any coloring page for A4 or US Letter paper. Choose your margin, scale mode (fit-width, fit-height or custom), and see the exact print dimensions and pixel requirements for crisp line art.

Formula used
Scale factor = min(Printable W ÷ Image W, Printable H ÷ Image H)
Scaled print size = Image size × Scale factor
Required pixels = (mm ÷ 25.4) × DPI
The "fit" mode scales the image uniformly so it fills the printable area in at least one dimension without overflow, preserving the original aspect ratio.
Example calculations
Example 1 — Square coloring page (200 × 200 mm) on A4, 15 mm margin:
Printable area = 180 × 267 mm. Scale = min(180/200, 267/200) = 0.9. Printed: 180 × 180 mm with 43.5 mm free at the bottom.
Example 2 — A5-landscape coloring page on Letter, 12 mm margin:
Printable area = 192 × 255 mm. Original = 210 × 148 mm. Scale = 192/210 = 0.914. Printed: 192 × 135 mm.
How to use this calculator
- Choose paper size: A4 or US Letter.
- Enter the margin in mm — 10–15 mm is comfortable for children.
- Enter the coloring image dimensions (width × height in mm or px).

Recommended margins for coloring pages
| Context | Margin | Reason |

| Home inkjet printer | 10–15 mm | Most home printers have ~5 mm non-printable zone |
| Office laser printer | 10 mm | Narrow non-printable zone |
| Children (kindergarten) | 15–20 mm | Easier to hold and color without going off-edge |
| Full-bleed (professional) | 0 mm + 3 mm bleed | Requires borderless printer |
Notes & limitations
Line art prints best at 150–300 DPI; below 100 DPI lines may appear jagged. For a library of free, print-ready coloring pages, visit ColoringBuds.com. Always test-print one page before printing in bulk.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a coloring page be for A4 printing?
A standard A4 coloring page with 10–15 mm margins has a printable area of roughly 180–190 × 267–277 mm. At 150 DPI the minimum pixel size is about 1,063 × 1,579 px.
Can I print a US Letter coloring page on A4?
Yes. US Letter (216 × 279 mm) is slightly wider and shorter than A4 (210 × 297 mm). This calculator scales it to fit within A4 margins.
What DPI should I use for coloring page line art?
150 DPI gives clean lines for home printing. Use 200–300 DPI if the page has fine details or small text captions.
How do I print a coloring page at full A4 size?
In the print dialog choose 'Fit to page' or 'Scale to 100%'. If the image is already at A4 dimensions (210 × 297 mm), print at 100% with no scaling.
Why do my printed coloring pages have wide white borders?
Your printer settings may be scaling the image down, or the original image has built-in white space. Use this tool to calculate the correct print area and adjust scaling in your print dialog.
