Formula used
A4 paper is 210 × 297 mm (ISO 216 standard). The printable area after subtracting margins is:
Printable height (mm) = 297 − 2 × margin
Pixels = (mm ÷ 25.4) × DPI
DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch) are often used interchangeably for digital images. Technically DPI refers to the printer's ink-dot density while PPI refers to the image's pixel density, but for print planning they are equivalent.
Disclaimer: Actual printed area may vary slightly with printer margins. This calculator provides an estimate for planning purposes.
Example calculations
Example 1 — Photo at 300 DPI, 10 mm margin, portrait:
Printable area = (210−20) × (297−20) = 190 × 277 mm. At 300 DPI: 190÷25.4×300 = 2,244 px wide, 277÷25.4×300 = 3,272 px tall.
Example 2 — High-res poster at 600 DPI, no margin, landscape:
Printable area = 297 × 210 mm. At 600 DPI: 7,016 × 4,961 px.
Example 3 — Coloring page at 150 DPI, 5 mm margin:
Printable area = 200 × 287 mm. At 150 DPI: 1,181 × 1,696 px. Ideal for crisp home printing.
How to use this calculator
- Choose Portrait (210 × 297 mm) or Landscape (297 × 210 mm).
- Enter your margin — 10 mm is standard; 0 mm for full-bleed.
- Set the target DPI — 300 for photo quality, 150 for casual prints.
- Read the pixel dimensions and resize your image before printing.
DPI reference table for A4 prints
| DPI | Use case | Portrait pixels (10 mm margin) |
|---|---|---|
| 72 | Screen / web preview | 539 × 790 px |
| 150 | Draft / home print | 1,181 × 1,696 px |
| 300 | Photo quality ✓ | 2,244 × 3,272 px |
| 600 | Fine art / high-detail | 4,488 × 6,543 px |
Notes & limitations
This calculator assumes standard A4 (210 × 297 mm). For US Letter paper use the Pixel to Print Size Calculator. Most home inkjet printers have a 3–5 mm non-printable zone; check your printer specs. For coloring pages and line art, 150–200 DPI is typically sufficient. Visit ColoringBuds for free printable coloring pages sized for A4 and Letter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the pixel size of A4 at 300 DPI?
Full A4 (no margin) at 300 DPI is 2,480 × 3,508 pixels. With a 10 mm margin on each side the printable area becomes 2,244 × 3,272 px.
What DPI should I use to print on A4?
300 DPI is the gold standard for photo-quality prints. For line art, illustrations or coloring pages, 150–200 DPI is usually sufficient.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI (pixels per inch) describes the pixel density of a digital image. DPI (dots per inch) describes the physical ink-dot density a printer uses. When preparing images for print, setting the image PPI to match the target DPI gives the best results.
Can I print full-bleed on A4?
Yes, if your printer supports borderless printing. Set margin to 0 mm to get full A4 pixel dimensions (2,480 × 3,508 px at 300 DPI). Add 3 mm bleed around the artwork to avoid white edges after trimming.
What size is A4 in inches?
A4 is 8.27 × 11.69 inches (210 × 297 mm). US Letter is slightly different at 8.5 × 11 inches (216 × 279 mm).
Why does my printed image look blurry on A4?
A blurry print usually means the image resolution was too low. Use this calculator to find the minimum pixel dimensions needed, then re-export or upscale your image before printing.
How do I print a coloring page perfectly on A4?
Set 10–15 mm margins, choose 150 DPI for line art, and make sure your image is at least 1,181 × 1,696 px. Browse free coloring pages at ColoringBuds.com — all are print-ready at A4 size.
